Steam game won't launch? 10 fixes that actually work

By chicksaw · Updated · 6 min read

Short answer: restart Steam and the PC, then right-click the game › Properties › Installed Files › Verify integrity of game files. That repairs missing or broken files, the most common cause. If it still won't start, update the graphics driver and work through the list below.

Before you start: does your PC meet the requirements?

Some games simply refuse to start on hardware they don't support, for example a graphics card without the required DirectX 12 features, or a 32-bit Windows. Check the game's requirements on its game page on doesitrun, which compares them with your parts.

The fixes, from quick to thorough

  1. Restart Steam and the PC. It clears stuck processes, which is why it is the classic first step.
  2. Verify the game files: Library › right-click the game › Properties › Installed Files › Verify integrity of game files.
  3. Update the graphics driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, and install pending Windows updates.
  4. Check your antivirus. Security software sometimes blocks or quarantines game files. Look in its quarantine and add an exception for the game folder if needed.
  5. Turn off overlays for a test: the Steam overlay (Properties › General), Discord, recording and FPS tools.
  6. Remove launch options you or a guide added earlier (Properties › General › Launch options). Wrong options can stop a game from starting.
  7. Install the redistributables: many games need Visual C++ runtimes or DirectX components. Steam usually installs them on first launch; if that was cancelled, run the installers in the game's _CommonRedist folder, if it has one.
  8. Windows "N" editions lack media components some games need. Install the Media Feature Pack from Microsoft.
  9. Clear Steam's download cache: Steam › Settings › Downloads › Clear Download Cache. You will have to sign in again.
  10. Reinstall the game, ideally on a different drive if you suspect the drive.

Game shows "Running" and then stops

That usually means the game process crashes right away. Verify files, update the driver and check the antivirus first. Games with anti-cheat (Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye) also need their anti-cheat service to install and run; verifying the files reinstalls it.

On Linux or Steam Deck

Try another Proton version: Properties › Compatibility › force a specific compatibility tool. ProtonDB reports often name the version that works. Some games with anti-cheat don't run on Linux at all. Our Steam Deck page shows the status per game.

Still not working?

Search the game's Steam discussions for the exact error message. After a patch, many people usually report the same problem, often with a fix.

Before you buy the next game: check whether it runs, and how well, on your PC.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my Steam game open?
The most common causes are missing or broken game files, an outdated graphics driver, antivirus software blocking the game, overlays and wrong launch options. Verifying the game files in Steam fixes the first one.
How do I verify game files on Steam?
In the library, right-click the game, choose Properties, then Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
What does it mean when a Steam game says Running and then closes?
The game process starts and crashes right away. Verify the files, update the graphics driver, check the antivirus quarantine and make sure the anti-cheat service is installed.
